If a package is scheduled to be delivered on a date that you will not be able to sign for it, the package can always be redirected to a hold location. The fastest way to do so is to use the tracking number provided to track the package and request it be redirected through the shipper's website. A government-issued ID and the tracking number will be needed to pick up the package at the hold location.
